Anton van Leeuwenhoek
In the year 1674, Anton van Leeuwenhoek of Holland built a simple microscope to examine small insects and blood. He was trying to visualize extremely tiny objects. Leeuwenhoek decided he needed a higher magnification. after a few years of trials he invented a lense that could magnify up to 270 diameters! It was truly the best magnification of the time. Because of this achievement, Leeuwenhoek was the first one to find, and identify, single cell organisms.
