Today’s modern microscope has changed greatly. Ranging from compound microscopes to scan tunneling microscopes. Modern science currently has four different major microscopes: Compound, Dissection, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Although advancements in optical research have slowed, and the developments have become more lackadaisical, our knowledge of the microscope is more defined than ever. We understand the optical principles better, and are awaiting advancements in technology to continue microscope improvement. Compared to the earliest microscopes, our modern ones have increased 10,000 to 200,000x times more. We have made great progress. We would have never gotten as far as we have without all of the great philosopher's, spectacle makers, and scientists in history.
To summarize, the microscope has seen many developments over the past 2,000 years, most of them within the past 400 years. This device has changed science and human history, for the better, and will continue to do so.
