Charles A. Spencer
As time passed, a man by the name of Charles A. Spencer (1813-1881) was the first American microscope maker. He announced himself to be a maker of microscopes in 1838 at age 25. By 1840, he had created a catalogue of many different microscopes, thereby becoming a well known microscope maker. He moved to Geneva, New York to make more microscopes and worked for the Geneva Optical Company. Over the next three years, the company’s name eventually changed to the C.A. Spencer & Sons for Geneva Optical Company. This company supplied the world with “modern microscopes.”
